Is the light in your house bright over❓

Updated: Feb 4, 2021

With the continuous development of living standards, people have higher requirements for home lighting and want to have a comfortable lighting method like hotels, therefore, the home decoration also introduces a professional lighting design concept.

Taking LED light source as an example, the lighting industry will use a lot of professional knowledge. But here is only for ordinary consumers, popularizing several important knowledge points from the perspective of designers.

Power and luminous flux: We usually use power as a standard to evaluate the brightness of lamps. However, due to the continuous development of LED light sources, the use of power to measure the brightness of lamps is generally not standard. The brightness of the same power is different in different periods.

Therefore, in the LED industry, luminous flux is usually used as the brightness standard. The luminous flux refers to the total amount of all light emitted by the light source, which is proportional to the power. But we are still accustomed to using power as the brightness standard when purchasing lamps.

Color temperature: It is the color of light. The color temperature changes from low to high and the color changes from warm to cold. Take the sunlight in a day as an example. From sunrise to noon, the color temperature goes from low to high, and from noon to sunset, the color temperature goes from high to bottom. The market is generally represented by yellow light, neutral light, and white light, with color temperatures of 3000K, 4000K, and 5500K respectively.

3000K: warm light, giving people a sense of warmth, suitable for use in the bedroom, or as a wall washer.

4000K: neutral light, a wide range of use, with the feeling of sunlight.

5500K: white light, mostly used in the living room, but with people's pursuit of comfort, it is now less used in homes and is replaced by 4000K color temperature.

Color rendering: refers to the degree to which light irradiates an object to the inherent color of the object. This is based on sunlight. The better the reduction degree, the more natural it proves that the color rendering is better. The value of 100 is the highest. If you have used lamps with a high index in ordinary households, you can still feel the gap when you look at the low index.

Brightness and illuminance:

Brightness: It is the brightness that the eyes feel when the light source illuminates the object.

Illuminance: It is the intensity of the actual light irradiated by the light source on the surface of the object.

The term illuminance is often used in lighting design, and ordinary users only need to consider whether the brightness is appropriate. Generally, the light source is installed with the eyes to feel it. But this method is not accurate, because the human eye will automatically adjust the pupil to adapt to different brightness environments.

The best way is to buy an illuminance meter. Measure the illuminance when purchasing lamps. For the position of the dining table and desk lamp, you can use the illuminance meter to select a more suitable light source to avoid discomfort.

Besides, if the indoor color tone is dark, the required light intensity will be greater; if the indoor color is lighter, the required light intensity will be lower.

Glare: It is the light that directly hits the eyes or the light that affects the line of sight.

This is an important factor in meeting comfort. The most comfortable lighting is to see the light but not the light. High-end hotels are based on this requirement.

Therefore, when choosing lamps, try to choose lamps with lampshades or make hidden lamps. Many spotlights now have anti-glare treatment. You can choose a spotlight with a deeper light source to avoid glare.
