Guangzhou International Lighting Festival is an annual large-scale public art and culture event hosted by Guangzhou Municipal People's government. Guangzhou International Lighting Festival, together with France and Sydney, is one of the three major lighting festivals in the world. It will be held at the end of each year to guide enterprises to cooperate with the existing resources of the market and take the road of marketization to hold the annual public cultural event. Since 2011, Guangzhou International Lighting Festival has been held four times. UNESCO has selected Guangzhou International Lighting festival as a large-scale cultural event of 2015 "international light year", and made a special recommendation on the official website of "international light year".
Background
An excellent modern city must contain three connotations: Science and technology, humanity and ecology. According to the 12th Five Year Plan of Guangzhou and the guiding ideology of "smart Guangzhou, low-carbon Guangzhou, happy Guangzhou", combined with the planning objectives, lighting status, historical and cultural heritage, and modern metropolis status of Guangzhou, the municipal government proposed the idea of establishing "Guangzhou International Lighting Festival".

As the national lighting industry base, Guangdong lighting products account for 70% of the country. The Guangzhou government hopes to build the "Guangzhou International Lighting Festival" into a sustainable and international city landmark theme activity, to promote the development of Guangzhou Cultural Tourism, led and other low-carbon energy-saving lighting industry, and promote the promotion and application of China's energy-saving lamps.
To avoid waste, the lighting festival will mainly use the existing lighting in Guangzhou, such as Huacheng square to Haixinsha and other areas with good landscape lighting foundation. During the festival, temporary lighting devices and facilities will be used to assist water curtain, fireworks simulation, music, character performance, and other technical and artistic means, highlight the regional characteristics of China and Guangzhou, and carry forward the traditional historical and cultural, and artistic characteristics. Most of the lamps used are LED energy-saving lamps. We hope to further increase the popularization and application of energy-saving lamps through lighting energy saving.

The organizers invited famous production teams to assist with the opening ceremony. They are from the founding teams of large opening and closing ceremonies such as Beijing Olympic Games, Guangzhou Asian Games, and Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. With water and lighting as the medium, they light up the 2014 Guangzhou International Lighting festival with the glory of music.

2014 is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. The opening ceremony specially invited a team of famous musicians and dancers from France to participate in the performance. The use of musical instruments with sound and photoelectric elements to express the beauty of dance, music will be combined with the French and Lingnan Music Style, showing a new art form of Chinese and foreign blend.
In addition, this year's international lighting festival for the first time uses lighting works to perform the Guangzhou story of Pearl River night charm on the nine bridges in the front channel of the Pearl River (from west to East are Renmin bridge, Jiefang Bridge, Haizhu Bridge, Jiangwan Bridge, Haiyin Bridge, Guangzhou Bridge, Liede Bridge, Huanan bridge and Pazhou Bridge), and make up the most charming river embankment night. The river crossing bridge is an important hub connecting the north and south of the city. The nine bridges witness every step of Guangzhou's urban development. Today, they are endowed with new cultural connotations by the times in their posts. Through the LED light paintings hanging on the bridge, they show the changes in Guangzhou's economy, culture, commerce, and science and technology through nine themes. Colorful nine bridges, with the works of the major venues, complement each other, to create a grand event of urban lighting from Guangzhou and facing the world.
